Buggies I Have Owned
I have owned so many buggies over the years that I lost count of them. I
have had all kinds of rails and quite a few glass buggies. Here are some
pics of the ones that I have owned that I cold find pictures of:
This was my first VW that I owned. It had a whopping 36
horse engine and primer grey body. I had a few EMPI items
that I could afford on her. I did not know much about VWS
then but I was willing to learn!
This was the Buggy I built for my kids when they were 6 and 3
years of age. I taught both of them to drive in the buggy. This
was before yo could by a ready designed frame. I designed
and built this one with the help of my brother Dave. Sad part
was, on the way home from welding the last part on, I was hit
by a drunk. I was in a VW bus at the time following the buggy
home. That guy got me at 85 miles and hour, breaking my
legs, hip, skull, and leaving me completely deaf on my left
side where they pulled my skull back out. I had to learn to
talk, walk, and balance myself, due to the injuries. I finished
the buggy with one hand as my left side of face, arm, and leg
were paralized. I later learn how to use them again. No
wonder I don't believe in driving while your drinking. I have
been hit five times by idiots like that in my life. If you want to
drink, stay out of the darn car!
This is "SHILO". I got her back ( had sold her for kids needs
year ago ) right after I had recovered from Cancer. I was newly
married to the most wonderful wife a guy could ever have, but
she had never seen a dune buggy. When she came home that
day and saw it she remarked, "what is that?" I told her it was
my corvair dune buggy I had gotten rid of years ago when my
kids were small and had just been returned by the guy who
had her at Love Field where they ran her up and down the
airport runways ( they had to make room for a new corporate
jet so Shilo was out ).
Funny story about Shilo, a guy in a new ford truck was being
an A$$ on the Bush Highway trying to out run and me and force
me off the road ( why, I don't know....just an idiot ). I tried to let
him go around ( four lanes to choose from ) but he just kept
coming at me. I finally took off. By the time I got to forth gear
the speedo had broke but the guy was still behind me trying to
catch up. Then it happened, that ford threw up its engine all
over the highway, boy was he mad.
I felt bad for him, went back and ask what that was all about.
He promply shot me the finger....... guess he thought it was
worth a $20,000 new truck to try and take a twenty year old
buggy off the road. Until then I had no idea ole Shilo could
haul the mail that fast!
This was my F1 Hawk, the first long bodied buggy I ever had. I enjoyed
her and she won her share of car shows. I sold her to build another new
buggy that my beautiful wife Linda and I could build together. It is going
slow due to my health but we will finish - one day - or die trying.
